Olney Chamber of Commerce Announces 2024 Award Winners at Olney Community Awards Ceremony

Olney, MD — The Olney Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2024 Annual Awards, which were presented at the Olney Community Awards Ceremony and Reception held on March 30. This special event recognized outstanding individuals, businesses and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Olney community. 

2024 Award Winners:

Young Professionals of the Year: Walter Giusti & Sofia Taramona, Pegasus General Contractors
Walter Giusti and Sofia Taramona, engaged partners in both life and business, have been named the 2024 Young Professionals of the Year. Sherwood High School alumni and lifelong Olney residents, they have built successful careers while staying deeply connected to their community. Walter founded Pegasus General Contractors in 2019, and Sofia plays an integral role in the business, contributing to its growth and community-driven success. In addition to sponsoring many Chamber events, Sofia is actively involved in the Olney Community Day and National Night Out committees. Together, they make a dynamic team, driving positive change and leaving a lasting impact on the Olney business landscape.

Business of the Year: Christopher’s Hardware & Garden Center
Christopher’s Hardware & Garden Center has been awarded the 2024 Business of the Year honor. Known for its exceptional customer service, expert advice, and strong community support, Christopher’s has recently expanded to include a Garden Center. This family-run business continues to be a beloved resource for homeowners, gardeners, and DIY enthusiasts in Olney. In addition to its service to the community, Christopher’s has also been a proud sponsor and host of multiple Chamber events, further solidifying its commitment to supporting local initiatives and fostering a strong sense of community.

Business Leader of the Year: Sean Stanfield, What’s Up Promotions
Sean Stanfield of What’s Up Promotions has been named the 2024 Business Leader of the Year. A lifelong Olney resident, Sean is renowned for his unwavering support of the Chamber and local events. From sponsoring Chamber initiatives to volunteering his time and resources, Sean’s commitment has played a vital role in growing the Chamber’s reach and strengthening the local business network.

Public Safety Award: Officer Sean McKinney, Montgomery County Police Department
Officer Sean McKinney has been honored with the 2024 Public Safety Award for his bravery and investigative skills. On May 7, 2024, Officer McKinney de-escalated a tense situation in Olney involving a suspect using a child as a shield, ultimately uncovering illegal weapons and preventing a serious public safety threat. His professionalism, courage, and dedication to justice are a true testament to his commitment to keeping the community safe.

Public Safety Award: Chief George W. Brown, Jr., Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department
Chief Emeritus George W. Brown, Jr. is recognized with the 2024 Public Safety Award for his over six decades of distinguished service in fire and rescue. A veteran of both military and fire service, Chief Brown led the Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department for 21 years and continues to serve as a mentor and active member. His lifelong dedication has saved countless lives and enriched the community.

“These awardees truly embody the heart and soul of Olney,” said Terri Hogan, Executive Director of the Olney Chamber of Commerce. “We are honored to celebrate their exceptional achievements and steadfast dedication to both our Chamber and the broader community.”

The event also recognized the winners of the Greater Olney Civic Association Awards and highlighted the local nonprofits that received grants from the Olney Civic Fund, underscoring the spirit of collaboration and community support that defines Olney.
