About Us

Montgomery County DEP’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Section helps local businesses meet recycling requirements and advance the County’s zero-waste goals. Under Executive Regulation 1-15, all businesses must recycle mixed paper, commingled materials, yard trim, Christmas trees, and scrap metal. Through the SORRT (Smart Organizations Reduce and Recycle Tons) program, businesses receive tailored guidance, on-site technical assistance, training, and educational materials to strengthen recycling programs. The County offers multilingual resources, educational seminars, and practical tools to help organizations improve compliance and build effective recycling habits. Each year, around 800 businesses submit annual reports to SORRT, detailing the waste and recycling generated at their property. These reports allow SORRT to monitor compliance, identify opportunities for improvement, and learn of new and innovative waste reduction and recycling techniques in the business community.
