Portrait Painting Workshop

In this workshop award-winning painter Hiu Lai Chong will demonstrate her step-by-step approach to portrait painting, from value drawing to the color application process. She will discuss the basic anatomy of the human head and how to apply that knowledge to capturing expression and likeness in a cohesive way. Design, composition, edges, color, shape and values will be discussed. There will be a demo each morning followed by various short and long pose painting exercises with a live model. Click here for the supply list. This is a 3-day workshop but you can register for one, two, or three days. Day one is value drawing with paint. Day two is color application. Day three combines both. Model fee will be due to the instructor on each day. Hiu Lai Chong received her early art training in Hong Kong, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She paints in oil and enjoys using colors and brushstrokes to express mood and feeling in her subjects. Her paintings have won numerous awards and have been shown in museums across the country. In 2011, Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine named Hiu Lai as one of Three Artists to Watch. In 2012 She was featured in the Oct-Nov issue of Plein Air Magazine. Her awards include the 2012 Artist Choice and Grand Prize at Plein Air Easton. Collector?s Choice Award at the Laguna Plein Air Invitational, Best in Show at Mountain Maryland Plein Air. In 2014, Hiu Lai received the First Place award in the Southwest Art Magazines Artistic Excellence Art Competition. In 2015, Hiu Lai received Best in Show in Maui Plein Air Invitational.

Fee: Single day workshop is $130 for museum members or $140 for nonmembers; 3 day workshop is $375 for museum members or $400 for nonmembers
