Native American History and Culture Camp will introduce participants to the rich and vibrant Native cultures of Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay region. Through lecture/demonstrations, hands-on activities, and workshops, participants will learn about Native worldview, history, and geography of tribes before contact, traditional foods and plants, storytelling and music, material culture and lifeways, archaeology, games, and technology. Mini-workshops and demonstrations will include making pinch pots, cattail dolls, cordage, finger weaving, and making fire.
The program will be led by Piscataway tribal elder Rico Newman with the participation of archaeologist Kate Dinnel from the Jefferson Patterson Historic Park and Museum, Lynne Bulhac from the Archaeological Society of Maryland, and cultural interpreter, Jose Montano, Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of the American Indian.
Hours: 8:30 am -3:00 pm
Before and After Care: 8-8:30 and 3-5, $20 extra
Tuition: $70 for members; $75 for non-members
